7 Reasons Why WordPress Could Fail – #5

I almost forgot that I needed to finish this series this morning…! Perhaps it’s because I don’t believe that WordPress can really fail…

Huh. Who knows.

If you’re just jumping in, I’ve been detailing what I believe to be 7 ways in which WordPress could possibly fail. If you’ve missed the previous 4, you can find the posts here, here, and here and here.

Ok. So now onto number 5.

Reason #5 – Hackers

Historically, WordPress has been (at times) pretty “hackable,” meaning that with very little knowledge (but a lot of know-how) you could gain access to any WordPress’s administrative control panel.

That, of course, is not good for business.

Major hacks have cropped up every so often but it’s been relatively silent for a while now, and that’s great. But we have to remember that WordPress is “software” which means it can be broken.

Just like how Apple computers are gaining more and more and more marketshare they are going to be targeted more and more and more by hackers. The reason why Windows machines are attacked so often is because the vast majority of users in the world use that operating system. Period. The same thing could occur with WordPress as more and more and more users start to migrate over.

WordPress has an amazing track record for security, all things being equal and considered. But things could go “south” real fast if we don’t stand vigilante.

How to Save from Fail

Pray that the core developers are code-ninjas. Also, don’t install plugins that aren’t “kid tested and mother approved.” Do you research before hitting that “install” button.

    I was wondering, are the record number of spam posts a security flaw in WordPress, or just in the interwebs as a whole?

    interwebs as a whole. wordpress and it's spam software (akismet) is one of the best in the industry. it could be a lot worse…

    Well I am a lame dummy who obviously did something stupid. My blog was hacked last Thursday. Three tech guys and one friend in England are all convinced I was hacked. My friend in England is sure it wasn't a WordPress problem (as a system) but that the hacker came in through my ftp something. I don't know how to explain it. However, I fled to TypePad during the time I thought all was lost. My friend was able to cull out my data up to last Dec. 17. But I couldn't get anything between then and now and I can't get a clean export file to import into Typepad.

    Quite frustrated to say the least.
