Genome Theology

I was blessed to have my younger brother attend with me a Men’s Retreat @ Camp Tejas in Giddings Texas sponsored by The Austin Stone.

We had the pleasure of hearing from Darrin Patrick who established The Journey Church back in 2002 and is the VP of Acts29 Network.  A great time of building relationships and community, worshipping Christ, and talking about some crucial issues that men face.

But I think the most memorable moments were the walks in between events where I was able to talk heart to heart with my brother about issues, struggles, and the truth.

One particular issue that he brought up was the tension of being a Christian as well as a student who’s studying Biology for his pre-Med degree.  Obviously he hears a lot of science from his professors which categorically opposes faith… or does it?

Francis Collins, the man who cracked the human genome is scheduled, according to this article (which is rather old…), to write a book about how he’s convinced that there is a God.  Doing a little googling found that he had and it’s available to read online supposedly (or at least some of the content).

Amazing.

I didn’t have the best answer for my brother when he asked what he should do in regards to standing up for what he believes when a professor dogs on spirituality and Christianity, but I did tell him that it’s all about “timing.”  There’s a time and a place for spiritual discussions (in wisdom) and the classroom isn’t always the place nor is it the time.

I have learned that science does not reject the existence of God but can assist in helping us find answers about Him and what He’s done in Creation.  I have also come to learn that programming, and computer science for that matter, also provide astounding metaphors for God and even Christ.

It appears, to me, that Collins was right as he said that scientific discoveries provide “opportunities to worship.”  I hope that I can have the same attitude as I do the work I’ve been called to do.
