Great Leaders Make Everything Better

I have the privilege of working with some of the most amazing people on the planet. In addition, I have the honor of working with some of the smartest and talented leaders ever. I honestly don’t believe that I’ve found myself so blessed…

There’s a lot of ambiguity in what I do; I think it’s a combination of the type and kind of work as well as my background and experience mix. Ambiguity can easily lead to discouragement and frustration.

But something I’ve learned recently is that great leaders make everything better, just like Optimus Prime.

… … …

(Forget the last part of that sentence… I was trying to be funny on a somewhat-serious post… i’m so lame. In fact, I wanted to title this post “Andy Stanley is like Optimus Prime” but I don’t want that showing up in any Google Results…).

… … …

It’s not that they solve the immediate needs and/or problems but they provide guidance and “leadership” that helps focus everyone properly in the right direction. When an entire organization finds itself re-aligned and when eyes meet, heads nod in agreement, and we move together, there’s really nothing like it.

And all the issues that I thought I had seem to vanish. Well, they are still there, but the anxiety disappears and issues seem to become less in volume, degree, and severity.

Great leaders can do this quite well. Poor leaders (and I’ve had too many to count) just add to the confusion, increase complexity, and kill their staff with needless worry.

I thank God that I have some decent leaders that I work for. I knew that when I first started, but now I’m beginning to really know it for real.

That will forever be the question I ask now: What would Optimus Prime do?

    But I think you're right.

You're so right! In times like these, we seldom find great and true leaders. We only fine fake ones who pretend they are. My prayer as i've said in facebook comment is for me to be a great leader today and until my death. For me to always make things better in what i do.

Andy's coming to Hillsong next year. I'm looking forward to this a lot, but it seems my wife and I are the only people down here who know who he is (the eruption of applause from the crowd when he was announced was decidedly 2-people-centric).

This should change really soon I hope :)

Meanwhile, I'll keep being jealous that you get to work with him…

Count me in for Andy at hillsong. Actually, count me in for any trip back to Australia.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Even though I work solo, two weeks ago I asked a great leader to boss me around for a 20 minute meeting once a week. It's made all the difference so far. Everyone needs to be under someone else to some degree.
