Politics and Social Media

It’s not often that I’ve blogged about politics.  In fact, this may be the first “real” post about politics.  … And, I’m not even going to go there all the way yet…!

But, this study done recently and reported by Jeremiah Owyang was definitely intriguing.

Image and article after the break.

It appears that Democrats, generally speaking, are more likely to engage with the medium of Social Media and online social technology.

Does this speak to the democratization of the web?  Or rather the fact that the web is truly a democratic medium?

Probably the most truth was the last part of the post regarding the fact that it’s probably all about the technographics of the voters.

But, seriously…  Here’s the question… or the point…

Is the “internet” a big thing in politics?  For you?

I think so…  in fact, I think it’s determining who I’m going to vote for…

What about you?

The Internet has been a game changer in this election. Most news organizations had deemed Jeremiah Wright a non-issue. It wasn’t until videos of his sermons went viral on YouTube that it hit the mainstream media.

I subscribe to email newsletters from both parties. Whether it is right or wrong this has really pushed me in a certain direction. For weeks now I have been getting email after email from both sides. On the one side I have been told time after time how hateful and disgusting the opposite candidate is. The other side has been leaps and bounds more respectful and actually focused more on the campaign and related issues than demonizing the opposite candidate. This has really been discouraging because I genuinely believe both candidates were above letting this go on.

This isn’t the decision-maker for me, but it is significant. I don’t want a president that leans heavy on mudslinging tactics.

I believe we are just starting to see the impact of the internet in politics. Would Sarah Palin’s image be defined so quickly just four years ago?

I am trying to help Democrats and non-profits with how best utilize social media, and would love to talk to you about it some time. Shoot me an email if you are interested.
