Re-Categorizing For the Win

batch-categories

One of the most basic SEO strategies in regards to blogs is how strategic you develop and build out your categories. Less is definitely more. Period.

When I’m consulting and redesigning blogs I always have to make my clients re-categorize. I recently “encouraged” this guy to edit over 1,000+ posts.

That sucks. But, the return is powerful. Trust me.

Here’s a good plugin that might just help you in your endeavor: Batch Categories Plugin for WordPress.

It does exactly what you think it does. So, chow down!

I couldn't agree more. You are just going to confuse visitors and search engines with endless loops of posts and categories. Keep it simple, key categories and if you want to add more depth use tags on a blog but make them no-follow links.

Well, by inference, less categories equals more focus. Hmmm maybe I need to do something about the uncategoized category I have.

Well at least I have only 165 posts and not a over a 1000.

But wow I am impressed that he went and did all that work – cos it looks like he must have listened to you from what I see.

John – you command much respect, cooool.

Very good post. This may be something I can use to freshen up my posts.

I relaunched my blog and basically deleted all the categories and started new. Then I added about 10-12 new categories and made a covenant with the Lord that I wouldn't keep adding new categories :)

Retroactively speaking this plugin might help me go backwards and categorize all the uncategorized posts that are just floating identity-less on my blog.

    I don't know.

I just did some of this re-categorizing a few days ago and man, only if I had known that such a plugin existed, I may have saved myself a couple hours… :(

"I recently “encouraged” this guy to edit over 1,000+ posts." Yes you did! But I did that pretty quick…right? 2-3 hours.

How many categories would you suggest. I've got close to 25 categories… I know, way too many. I'm in the midst of a major overhaul, so now is a perfect time to re categorize. What do you think? 8-10? What's the most you would do? I have over 400 posts to edit. It's not 1000, but still not going to be a walk in the park.

8 is perfect. up for a challenge? get to 6. ;)
