Surprises.

I love surprises.
And I don’t say “love” flippantly either. I really really really like to be surprised. Partly it’s simply due to being extremely entertained, but the value of the shock is so flippin’ awesome.
I love how it rattles your mind and how it challenges your logic; I love that feeling of feeling completely off-track leaving your breathless and grasping for a firm mental landing. Your heart stops; breathing quickens, words come hard, and your mind locked in combat between the “once” and the “now.”
For you gamers:
Do you remember the feeling of shock when you realized that Samus Aran, the hero(ine) from the Metroid video game series, was a girl?
OMGgggggggggggggggggggGGGGGGGGGGGGGgggggg!!!!!!!!!!11111111!!!!1
The controller, barely hanging in your hands due to near-bloody thumbs mixed with the perspiration of having to pound the same 2 buttons 10,000 times, and all this time you’re thinking you’re controlling the biggest bad@$$ ever created (who was obviously a guy in your head).
And as you see the helmet come off, the locks of hair spin down… vertigo.
Ah.
I think life, without surprises, sucks.
And, I’m not sure I get enough.

Samus…I felt so lied to…
oh, but it was so good……!
#1 – great picture
#2 – I hear what you're saying about surprises. I understand that you like to be challenged. I typically don't like surprises because I feel completely out of control. You're right… it challenges your logic. I like to always feel in control. It's comfortable… knowing what's going to happen next. I can plan for it. As I mature though… I see the value of surprises. I'm starting to be more open to them. I try to not tense up and dislike whatever surprised me. I'm trying to measure my thoughts before I say them.

You're a gamer, right?
No actually I'm not a gamer. But I do know who Samus is. I've played… just haven't in a really long time.

So the message my pastor is giving right now is about how God took Mary, an insignificant young woman, and transformed her into a significant person who changed the course of history. He worded his whole sermon around the phrase "Let It Be" and the Beatles song of the same name.
I thought about this post and my hesitation with surprises. Being pregnant was definitely a surprise to Mary. But she took the mantra "Let It Be" and it turned out to be something even more amazing than she could have ever imagined. When something doesn't go as planned… "Let It Be".

Comon' The shoulder pads didn't give it away?
hahaha.
you must love LOST then. That show is one surprise after another!
i've actually never seen one episode…
LOL about Lost
I FREAKED when I beta Metroid 1 for the NES.
It took FOREVER to beat (This was before internets) and when that helmet popped off, well you captured the image of me beautifully in your post. The feeking was such a shock it lasted for a good week or so, making me smile when I'd think about it. Shocks like that that leave a good feeling are rare indeed.
I really enjoy your blog immensely, consider me a new regular!
