Twit-B*tching – Bad Idea Guys

twitbitching

It’s funny (not really).  Recently I’ve seen a number of what I humorously call “Twit-B*tching” on Twitter.

Best part? All of them have been between Christians. What a great testimony (dripping with sarcasm here).

[Check this breakdown of one recently by ChurchMarketingSucks.com]

Now, I will admit that I’ve participated in a few, so I raise my hand in guilt and shame, but I’ve been re-evaluating how I do this Twitter “thing.” Here are a few of my thoughts:

  • I have (historically) spent a lot of time on it.
  • Because I spend a lot of time on it I hear a lot of “chatter.”
  • Because I hear a lot of chatter, I’m more tempted to jump in to the conversation stream.
  • Because of my increased engagement in the conversations there also increases the “opportunity” to participate in conversations that are “not so healthy.”
  • Because of that I get in to “Twit-B*tching” about pretty stupid things.
  • Bleh.

So, I’ve decided that I’m not going to be on Twitter as much as I have. You probably have already seen my decreased “twitteria.”

But here’s the much larger and important point: There are a ton of people who follow me who do not love Jesus. I’m not sure I’m “winning” them over by blasting another fellow brother in the face about something pretty dumb.

Bad testimony people.

That’s all I’ll say about that.

interesting post, and I agree that we should not be using twitter to blast others, but I haven't really found that to be the case when I compare it to other online social media forms or other forums in general. I have found most followers to be very helpful and uplifting but I guess it is all in who you follow.

I am very aware myself of several non-Believers that follow me on twitter (and my blog for that matter) and I would hope nothing I did or said would bring down the Church as a whole, but I am sure that is not always the case. Nice to read your post though to keep some perspective although I don't think getting off twitter will do anything other than deprive your followers of your insight… having just found your blog I would assume there are many who find your comments insightful :)

I'm loving the recent evaluation so many are taking re all things social media and how their witness for Christ is reflected in how they are used. Keep on keeping it real John

I've just seen it come up recently. The thing to remember, though, is that twitter is “new” in comparison to the much “older” forms of discussion on the web. Since it's new, we don't see as much nor is there as much traffic. if it does reach critical mass and achieve the volume of the other traditional mediums, then yes. you'll see it everywhere.;)

Sometimes social media allows a healthy level of authenticity … but sometimes our authentic selfs are buttholes.

I've had to sit down and evaluate why I do just about anything. I've had to strip down the layers of pride and say "Jimmy, what's this for?" I take days off Twitter, mostly Sundays and now I stopped during AI.
I'm not stopping completely. I do schedule time in the mornings and then at the end of the day.
As far as the big church/little church…for me, it's where God has me now. I've seen God working on both fronts. I don't think He's partial to mega-sites or small churches. Wow..any mention anywhere about what God would have us do?

Good for you :) I have a sticker under my monitor from a series we did at church last year that reads "beware of mouth" that is supposed to remind me to be aware of what I am saying and how that edifies and reflects Christ. I suppose we should not forget the other places where we have a voice.

I run hot and cold on using social media. The issues you talk of are one of the things that make me dial down the volume from time to time. Healthy that you can talk about this and do something with your own patterns of use.

By the way, I love the irony of a "Tweet this" button at the bottom of a post talking about limiting your own tweetness.

The issue seems to be bigger than we wish to acknowledge at this time. I've been on Twitter since April '08 and it seems that this app has just opened the door for more and more lashing out without thinking. Lashing out at a people, lashing out at a situation, lashing out at place. Far too much for my taste and I have stopped following some of the guilty twits/twitterers/whatever you call them – in this case twit is probably correct… – we type and hit send without processing any discernment in how we will be received.

My thought, get a diary and complain all you want but don't go public.

dude. i got a diary recently just because i was being stoooooooooooopid. my mentors made me do it. love it. ;) thanks for the encouragement.
