Will You Listen? Will You Remember?

Roenne, I want to tell you a story.

Will you listen? Will you remember?

Tomorrow, January 20th, 2009, the 44th President of the United States will be Inaugurated. This time, though, it will be different.

You see Roenne, tomorrow, your mother and father will witness the first African-American being inaugurated as the President of the United States. It has never happened before. It is historic and it will begin a journey that will impact you in ways that you cannot currently imagine nor understand.

I want you to know, my child, that this man’s election has caused an incredible amount of anxiety, discord, and disunity among people who are called, above nearly all else, to be “one”. It has broken my heart, and it has broken your Heavenly Father’s Heart as well.

I want you to know, Roenne, that your father and mother will be praying for our new President and, as soon as you are able, I will teach you to do the same.

You see, I did not grow up with the idea that it was worth my time to pray for the President. I now know that it is our duty, responsbility, and God’s desire to pray for those that look after us, regardless of our opinion of them.

One day you will read about all this and the history books will tell you nearly everything you’ll ever need to know save one: That your parents prayed for the Obama family, loved on the Obama family, and encouraged others who call themselves Christian to do the same.

Tomorrow, as you eat your oatmeal, drink your milk, and make a mess for your mother and father, we will be trusting in the Lord for all things, including his newest servant.

Will you listen? Will you remember?

Great Post! So many of my Christian Brethren are you arguing about Obama's validity. The fight is over. It is time for us to pray for our leaders, whoever they may be, and stand behind them as one Christian Nation.

    Totally with you.

Do you think his election has caused more anxiety and discord than Bush 41, Clinton, or Bush 43?

probably not. but it's gotten a lot of attention… we ride the way of “now”… but forget the “past”.

Oatmeal?!I'm making some pancakes!Need a power breakfast today. This is part of our social studies for homeschool.Sharon, the kids and myself will be watching and praying all day. Need I remind us of Romans and our call from Scripture to be in submission to civil authorities? Get over it brothers and sisters. Get over it, get into the world, and get to reaching out.
    'nuff said!

Excellent post John! I could not agree with you more! The Bible never said that we should be united in political party or anything else other than Christ – that we are one body. Now, more than ever, this MUST happen so that the world may know the love of Christ through His body. Amen to your blog brother!

thanks bro. trying to keep it level headed. my daughter has picked up on it… and that's not good. unity is what is called for, not partisanship.

You are welcome! Kids are very perceptive about what is going on in "adult world." Leading them back to what they need to know from God's Word is always the best. We have told our daughter the exact same thing you have talked about here and we do pray for not just President Obama, but all elected officials down to the local ones, that, as the Bible says, we may live in the peace with them and in the peace of God.
